When the band was abroad entertaining the Troops, they were entitled to the same allocations which included 200 cigarettes a week, whatever their age. Dorothy England, who had joined her elder sister Sylvia in the band, was just 16 "That's how I first started smoking - because when we were in Germany we got all got the allowance of 200 cigarettes a week. I remember Nora and myself puffing away one night in the hotel room and I heard my sister coming. Nora opened the window quickly to get rid of all the smoke."
